Lucky Lindy

Bylo pár minut před půl jedenáctou večer, když 21. května 1927 na pařížském letišti přistál malý hornoplošník Spirit of St. Louis. Seděl v něm Charles Lindbergh alias Lucky Lindy. Muž, který právě jako první v historii po více než 33 hodinách od startu v New Yorku sólově bez mezipřistání přeletěl Atlantik. I přes pokročilou hodinu ho na letišti vítal stotisícový dav.

Lindbergh kvůli přeletu nespal 55 hodin v kuse, po celou dobu letu vypil pouze litr čaje a snědl čtyři sendviče. Díky tomuto odvážnému počinu se původně poštovní pilot stal celebritou první třídy. Převzal několik státních vyznamenání včetně Řádu německého orla, když v roce 1938 večeřel na americké ambasádě v Berlíně s Hermannem Göringem. 

Nevyhnul se ani dalším kontroverzním momentům, nicméně jeho celoživotní přínos pro letectví jako obor je nezpochybnitelný. Jako brigádní generál pracoval pro americké armádní i civilní letectvo. Na sklonku života však v narážce na ničení životního prostředí prohlásil: „Raději bych, aby tu byli ptáci než letadla.“

Lucky Lindy

It was couple of minutes before half past ten in the evening on the 21^st May 1927 when small high-wing monoplane Spirit of St. Louis landed in Paris. In it sat Charles Lindbergh alias Lucky Lindy, the first man in the history to fly solo nonstop 33 hours from start in New York over the Atlantic Ocean. Despite late hours hundred-thousand-headed crowd welcomed him at the airport.

Lindbergh hadn’t slept for 55 hours because of the transatlantic flight; he had drunk only 1 litre of tea and eaten four sandwiches. Thanks to this courageous act former mail pilot became first class celebrity. He received several state awards including Order of the German Eagle given to him in 1938 by Hermann Goering at the American embassy in Berlin.

However there were more controversial moments in his life, his lifelong contribution to aviation is undeniable. He worked as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Force and also for commercial air forces. At the end of his life in a hint to the destruction of environment, he said “I’d rather have birds here than planes.”
