To je doba jednoho ze zástupců „Ztracené generace“ F. S. Fitzgeralda a zároveň jeho hrdiny ve slavném románu Velký Gatsby z roku 1925. V době vzniku se však přehnané popularitě netěšil, kvůli politickým událostem byl opomíjen až do svého znovuvydání a následném boomu v 50. letech.

Román oplývá elegancí a vyčerpávajícími popisy bohatství. Tajemný Gatsby totiž obývá obrovský palác ve zbohatlické čtvrti Long Islandu (NY), kde každý týden pořádá bujaré večírky, na něž není nikdo pozván, ale přesto jsou hojně navštěvovány newyorskou buržoazií. Mladý Nick Carraway toužící zbohatnout ve městě, které nikdy nespí, je jednoho dne pozván. Od té chvíle je svědkem příběhů a intrik jednotlivých hostů, a postupně odkrývá jejich milostná tajemství…

Gatsby přes veškerý nabytý luxus do této společnosti nezapadá. Vzývá totiž ušlechtilejší životní hodnoty než slávu a bohatství. Autor poukazuje na charakteristické znaky vyšší společnosti, kde veškeré city i láska jsou pouhou přetvářkou. Kritizuje také úpadek morálních hodnot, chamtivost, cynismus a zamýšlí se nad dopady války na lidskou mentalitu.

This is the age of one of the representatives of the ‘Lost Generation’ F. S. Fitzgerald and also the age of the main character of his famous novel the Great Gatsby form 1925. It was though not very popular at the time of its origin and it was omitted due to political events till its reissue and following boom in 1950s.

The novel is full of elegance and exhaustive descriptions of wealth. Mysterious Gatsby lives in an enormous palace in the rich neighbourhood of Long Island (NY) and every week hosts hilarious parties to which nobody is invited and yet they are abundantly visited by New York bourgeoisie. Young Nick Carraway who yearns to get rich in the city that never sleeps is invited one day. Since then he witnesses stories and intrigues of other guests and little by little uncovers their love secrets.

In spite of his acquired luxurious life, Gatsby does not fit into this community. He invokes more noble life values than fame and wealth. The author points out characteristic signs of the upper class where all feelings and even love are mere hypocrisy. He also criticises the decline of moral values, greed, cynicism and thinks about the impact of war on human mentality.
