Mexická malířka Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón byla osobností nezlomného charakteru a živelného temperamentu. Prožila bouřlivý život a navzdory nepřízni osudu se zapsala do dějin nejen jako skvělá malířka, ale i jako politická a sexuální revolucionářka.

Frida vždy vystupovala z řady. Dostala se jako jedna z mála dívek do Národní přípravné školy (35 dívek na 2000 chlapců), která v Mexiku poskytovala nejlepší možné vzdělání. V 18 letech byla obětí fatální nehody autobusu s tramvají, při které jí projela železná tyč napříč celým tělem. Přežila jen zázrakem, nicméně po vážných zraněních a mnoha operacích měla trvale bolestivé následky. Tato konfrontace se smrtí zásadně ovlivnila její uměleckou tvorbu.

Frida během rekonvalescence začala tvořit olejomalby, přičemž nejčastěji šlo o autoportréty, a zamilovala se do o 20 let staršího muralisty Diega Rivery. Vztah Fridy a Diega byl velmi zvláštní a plný protikladů. Milovali se a nenáviděli zároveň, záviseli na sobě, nedali se ničím spoutat a omezit, překonali množství vzájemných nevěr, rozvedli se a znovu se vzali, oba byli velice angažovaní komunisté. Frida milovala muže i ženy, dokonce byla jeden čas milenkou Trockého, vždy si však přála mít s Diegem dítě, ale kvůli následkům nehody žádné z jejích těhotenství nedopadlo dobře. 

Čím více psychické i fyzické bolesti sílily, Frida intenzivněji malovala. Rána, která ji ale zlomila definitivně, přišla v roce 1953, kdy jí musela být amputována pravá noha. Malířka postupně rozpouštěla zbylou vůli k životu v hlubokých depresích a nakonec zemřela za ne zcela vyjasněných okolností ve svých 47 letech. Její poslední zápisek do deníku zněl: „Doufám, že konec je radostný – a doufám, že se nikdy nevrátím – Frida.“ Traduje se legenda, podle které během její kremace způsobil výbuch horkého vzduchu v otevřené spalovací peci narovnání jejího těla. Vlasy jí hořely a zářily jako svatozář.

Mexican painter Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was a person of unbreakable character and lively temperament. She lived a stormy life and despite the adversity she went down in history not only as a famous painter but also as a political and sexual revolutionary.

Frida has always stood out from the line. As one of the few girls she was accepted to the elite National Preparatory School (35 girls and 2000 boys) that provided the best possible education in Mexico. At the age of 18 she was involved in a fatal accident of a bus and a tram. An iron handrail impaled her through her pelvis and went almost through her entire body. She only survived by miracle. However, after serious injuries and many surgeries she suffered by painful consequences. This confrontation with immediate death has fundamentally influenced her artwork.

During convalescence she started creating oil paintings, most often self-portraits, and fell in love with a 20 year older muralist Diego Rivera. The relationship between Frida and Diego was quite strange and full of contradictions. The loved and hated each other at the same time, they depended on each other yet they refused to be bound and restricted by anything, they overcame many mutual affairs, they divorced and married again. They both were very committed communists. Frida loved both men and women, at a certain time she was Trockij’s mistress and she has always wanted to have a child with Diego. Sadly, due to the consequences of the accident none of her pregnancies resulted in childbirth.

The worse the mental and physical pain got, the more intensively Frida painted. The last straw that broke her definitely came in 1953 when her right leg had to be amputated. The painter slowly dissolved her will to live in deep depressions and eventually died under unclear circumstances at the age of 47. Her last journal entry said: “I joyfully await the exit – and I hope never to return – Frida.” The legend has it that during her cremation the explosion of hot air in an open incinerator caused her body to straighten and that her hair was burning and shining like a halo.
